The India Habitat Centre
(IHC) set up the Habitat Learning Centre (HLC) in February 2002 to expose under-privileged
children to the world of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and enable
access to knowledge on ICT so that they are able to explore more and better
options for a better quality of life. To achieve this, IHC has partnered with
various NGOs working with children from the marginalized communities, who bring
them to the Centre for learning programs that provides them with computer
literacy and skill development.
The HLC Programme:
The HLC’s programme has evolved over a period of time and the current batch went through a programme that included a three-month Basic Course (three concurrent batches) followed by a six-month Advanced Course (two concurrent batches) and a three month Skill-based Course in three streams.
The three streams which were offered in the Skill-based Course are as follows:
Basics
of Accounting Principles
Basics
of Hardware and Networking
Basics
of Visual Documentation
An English Language learning component is integrated into the programme.
Workshops on related topics are organized so that the children are exposed to new concepts and ideas. Topics include ‘Design’, ‘Magic Mathematics’, ‘Internet Safety’
86 children were enrolled by 14 NGOs for the Basic Course.
From now on IHC will run Advanced Course and Skill Development Course at the Habitat Learning Centre. The HLC Extension Learning Centres will run the Basic Course and Advanced Course thereby acting as feeders for the Advanced and Skill-Based Courses in the HLC.
HLC Extension Centres:
A natural outcome of the ICT learning programme at the Habitat Learning Centre was the creation of computer facilities at NGO locales to further disseminate learning on ICT. This was done through the setting up of HLC Extension Centres.
The purpose behind going beyond the HLC at IHC is to attempt to reach the learning to more children who may not be able to come to the HLC for a variety of reasons: distance, timing, cost etc.
There are currently 10 HLC Extension Learning Centres in various locations in Delhi with partner NGOs.
These HLC Extension Centres are supported by IHC with computers, curriculum, content as well as training for the facilitators working in bastis and slums so that they are able to enhance the quality of their interaction with children and are equipped with efficient tools to impart IT education to children.
The faculty at the Learning Centre are all experts in their field and bring a high level of commitment to their teaching.

Participants who have completed our
courses have been able to take up livelihoods in different organizations or set
up enterprises on their own. Among the notable successes has been a group of
participants who have formed an NGO and set up a computer learning centre on
their own in Lal Kuan area of Delhi and have begun conducting classes for
participants from the marginalized community there! IHC has now set up an Extension Learning
Centre in their organization.
